♡Field Notes #1: Drafts, Damage, and What I’m Drinking
— Updates on what I’m writing, consuming, and/or working on
Hello, beloved subscribers and miscellaneous sentient inbox spirits.
This is Field Notes: a report from inside my brain, where the plot is like a feral raccoon and I’m just trying to get it into a harness without losing a finger.
I’m not sure if this will be monthly, semi-weekly like the Bubble Tea Report, or once in a blue moon.
(If you are an evil villain: clearly, that was no moon.)
✍️ What I’m writing
This week: Butt in chair, hand on keyboard (BICHOK). No excuses. Only vibes. Mild wrist pain. The usual.
I worked on Elsewhere and Other Fine Disasters, which is currently in the stage I call:
“Everything is fine. I will fix that later. Hopefully.”
Word count for the week: 8,049
Current problem: My “minor character” decided they needed a backstory and evolved into a gun-toting former nun in a Midwestern suburban town.
Current delight: My minor character decided they’re the main character and honestly? Total respect.
Most vivid detail (aka: the line that grabbed me by the collar):
They call it a retirement party, which is what good institutions do when they want to make a departure look voluntary.
St. George’s Parish hall smelled like sheet cake, lemon cleanser, and the sharp perfume of women who believed God was watching—and also judging—how much frosting you took.
🔧 What I’m working on (besides writing)
Right now I’m doing the glamorous labor of being a functional human with a book-brain:
Making peace with my outline (it refuses peace)
Cleaning up continuity so the story doesn’t sprout new limbs when I blink
Figuring out whether Field Notes is a regular column or a feral creature that appears when it wants snacks
🎮 What I’m playing
I am playing The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, which is basically “fantasy bureaucracy meets volcanic misery” and I mean that as a compliment.
Every quest feels like:
Someone sends you to fetch a spoon,
The spoon is guarded by a minor god,
And you still have to file paperwork afterward.
Honestly? Inspirational.
☕ What I’m drinking
Today’s beverage situation is a rotating door of comfort:
Ginger lemon tea (for health, warmth, and the illusion that my life is balanced)
And because I have no self-control in minimalist retail environments: I bought the Instant Maple Chestnut Latteand Apple Cinnamon Latte from MUJI.
If you see me in public holding an MUJI latte, no you didn’t. I’m a serious writer. I have gravitas. (The latte disagrees.)
My Yogi ginger tea bag said, “Appreciate yourself and honor your soul.”
I’m not sure if that’s advice or a warning label.
🧭 What’s next
Next week I’m aiming to:
Keep BICHOK going (because the raccoon plot only respects consistency)
Decide whether the ex-nun gets one backstory paragraph or an entire spinoff series
Write at least one scene that doesn’t immediately demand a second, angrier draft
💌 One tiny ask
Tell me in the comments: are you more interested in
(A) excerpt drops, (B) micro-fiction “snacks,” or (C) behind-the-scenes craft/process chaos?
I’ll feed the people what they want. Within reason. And within the limits of whatever pact I signed with my deadline
Until Next time,
Alex Eos🧋

Honestly.. and I'm hoping to win "least helpful comment" but I think anything you write will be good! I have no preference.. you could even just alternate for whatever you're feeling
